Latin American Art Focused Biennials
This September is an amazing month for Latin American Art. It is the dominate focus of four major biennials. Beginning with the Dublin Contemporary 2011 (September 6-October 31, 2011), 8th Bienal do Mercosul (September 10-November 15, 2011), 11th Biennale de Lyon (September 15-December 31, 2011) and finally the 12th Istanbul Biennial (September 17-November 13, 2011). These four Biennials are futher testament to the worldwide interest in the ground breaking art from Latin America.
Drawing Room Exhibition curated by Tanya Barson, Curator of International Art, Tate Modern
Tanya’s exhibition The Peripatetic School: Itinerant Drawing Practices from Latin America will include the work of Brigida Baltar, Jose Tony Cruz, Andre Komatsu, Mateo Lopez, Jorge Macchi, Gilda Mantilla and Raimond Chaves, Nicolas Paris and Ishmael Randall Weeks. The exhibition opens on September 22 and continues through November 13.
Margarita Aguilar has been appointed director of El Museo del Barrio
Aguilar is currently a vice president and senior specialist in Latin American art at Christie's. She served in the curatorial department at El Museo from 1998 to 2006.
Latin American Acquisitions Committee
We are happy to welcome David Cohen (Mexico) as a new member of our Latin American Acquisitions Committee which helps acquire contemporary Latin American art for Tate.
