54th Venice Biennale
A number of artists that we have helped acquire are represented in the 54th Venice Biennale. Alexander Apóstol’s work will be represented in the Latin American Pavilion and his works Polished Tenant 2001 and Documentary 2001 were acquired by the Latin American Committee in 2006. Melanie Smith will be representing Mexico and her major installation Six Steps to Abstraction, version 3 2004 was bought by the Latin American Committee in 2006. Jennifer Allora and Guillermo Calzadilla will be representing the United States. The Latin American Acquisitions Committee in 2008 acquired their performance piece Balance of Power 2007. Finally, Alejandro Cesarco whose video Zeide Issac 2009 was on display at Tate Modern in 2010 will represent Uruguay.
Velazquez Prize Goes to Artur Barrio
The Brazilian artist, who is representing Brazil in the 54th Venice Biennale, has won the $180,000 Spanish prize for his "radical poetic art that echoes and creates a relationship with political situations," announced Spanish culture minister Angelez Gonzalez-Sinde. Last year the award went to Doris Salcedo.
Latin American Acquisitions Committee
