Jessica Morgan named The Daskalopoulos Curator, International Art at Tate
We are pleased to announce that Jessica Morgan has been named The Daskalopoulos Curator, International Art at Tate. The post, which has been generously funded by the D. Daskalopoulos Collection, Greece, is for an initial three-year period and during this time, Jessica will mainly focus on acquisitions of contemporary and emerging international art, specifically from non-western regions, which are central to Tate’s commitment to broadening the geographical scope of the Collection. As The Daskalopoulos Curator, International Art, Jessica will also continue to curate displays and exhibitions at Tate Modern, maintain a research portfolio and support the Tate’s International Council and North American Acquisitions Committee on a regular basis. An internationally renowned curator, she brings to the role her particular expertise and proficiency in the field of emerging art. Since joining Tate in 2002, Jessica has curated numerous exhibitions including John Baldessari (2009) and The World as a Stage (2007), Martin Kippenberger (2006), Time Zones (2004), Common Wealth (2003) and The Unilever Commission in 2006 and 2008. She is the curator of the forthcoming exhibition of Gabriel Orozco opening at Tate Modern in January 2011 and will be the curator of the Unilever Commission in 2012.
Tate proves value of public investment by sharing its Collection in the UK and across the world
At a press conference on 9 September on the publication of its Annual Report 2009/10 and presentation of its 2011 programme, Tate announced that the year was the most successful on record for art works lent from Tate Collection to venues across the world. This increase is a direct result of a greater focus by Tate on its national and international program, transforming the way it exhibits the Collection and shares expertise with partners in the UK and abroad. From Jenny Holzer in Woking to JMW Turner in Beijing, René Magritte in Mexico City to Bruce Nauman in Warsaw, audiences at over 252 venues saw works lent from the Tate Collection. The inaugural tour of the ARTIST ROOMS collection, acquired by Tate and the National Galleries of Scotland from Anthony d’Offay through part gift/part purchase, reached wide audiences when it traveled across the UK to fourteen galleries. Tate toured fifteen of its exhibitions to nearly twenty international venues across ten different countries. It was also announced today that Tate acquired works by significantly more international artists than in previous years, from regions in the world that have been little represented in the national Collection of contemporary art. Acquisitions included works by artists from Algeria, Lebanon, Turkey, Iran, Egypt, Cuba, South Africa and Korea. Regional acquisition committees are now in place for Latin America, North America, Middle East and Asia Pacific region, making Tate’s international acquisition remit unique.
